defining a field as a currency

There has to be a better way to format a field as a currency than the current process which involves manipulating the XSLT. I know JDE stores in a unique way but that hasn't changed in ages. If a field is coming from JDE and is a currency, the developer should be able to check the currency type (USD, CAD, EURO, etc) and have the field format itself with currency symbol and proper comma and decimal placement.
